Sita-Marie Louw
I have always been drawn to stories, imagination and the worlds that exist beyond what we can physically see. Reading has played a large part in shaping the way I think creatively. A book can leave me with an image, an atmosphere or a feeling that stays in my mind long after the final page.
Painting became my way of giving those thoughts somewhere to exist.
I am especially interested in emotions and ideas that are difficult to put into words. I don't paint to explain them. I would rather create something that allows the viewer to feel, question and interpret the work for themselves.
I am drawn to texture, contrast and restrained colour, using them to create work that feels both familiar and uncertain. I like the idea that two people can stand in front of the same painting and walk away with completely different experiences of it.
As I continue to develop as an artist, I want to build a visual language that is unmistakably my own. I don't want to create work simply because it is beautiful. I want to create work that stays in someone's mind after they have walked away.
For me, the unknown is not an empty space waiting for an answer. It is where imagination begins.

Painting what words cannot hold.
