**Ieo Gek Ching** (b. 1989, Singapore) is a Singaporean artist whose practice explores the interconnectedness of animals, nature and the environment through intricately constructed hybrid forms.
She graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Fine Arts. Drawing inspiration from the distinctive characteristics, behaviours and idiosyncrasies of different animal species, Ieo combines selected anatomical features to create imagined creatures that reflect the diversity, complexity and fragility of the natural world.
Known for her meticulous line work, richly textured surfaces and distinctive visual language, Ieo’s practice examines humanity’s relationship with the environment and considers the delicate balance between humans, animals and the ecosystems they inhabit. Through her hybrid creatures, she invites viewers to reconsider familiar boundaries between species and to reflect on the interconnectedness of all living things.
About the artist
My practice explores the interconnectedness of animals, nature and the environment through the creation of imagined hybrid creatures. I am drawn to the distinctive characteristics, behaviours and idiosyncrasies of different animal species, and use these observations as a starting point for combining selected features into unfamiliar yet recognisable forms.
The hybrid creatures I create are neither entirely real nor entirely imagined. By bringing together characteristics from different species, I explore ideas of coexistence, adaptation and interdependence, while reflecting on the diversity and fragility of the natural world. The act of combining species allows me to question the boundaries we place between humans, animals and nature, and to consider how these relationships are continually shifting.
Meticulous line work and textured surfaces are central to my process. I build each creature through layers of carefully observed details, allowing the physical complexity of the works to mirror the complexity of the ecosystems that inspire them. Through this visual language, I seek to create a sense of wonder while also drawing attention to the vulnerability of the environments and species around us.
Ultimately, my work reflects a concern for ecological balance and humanity’s relationship with the natural world. By presenting familiar animal traits in unfamiliar combinations, I hope to encourage viewers to look beyond individual species and consider the wider networks of connect
