“Tender Lovers” is rendered in hot reds - crimson, vermillion and scarlet - touched with traces of yellow and given structure and softening by overpainting in wet in wet white. One of the figures appears absorbed in the intensity of their own feeling while the other engages us with a glance.
An amorous artwork reminiscing the story of two young lovers. Details of nostalgia, resilience, history, and youth are simultaneously captured within this piece. Socio-political understandings of traditional vs contemporary Japanese values are explored; in addition to gender politics and dynamics between man and woman. The image is a reference of the photograph the artist’s parents have lovingly taken in the 80s when seeking refuge at a Japanese hotel after their interracial marriage was turned against by both families when returning from Italy to Asia.
