“Charming No.5” is another of Li’s plant-based paintings, in this case likely the purple bamboo found in Henan Province, but in his hands the motif is the source of inspiration for the work rather than the basis for something aiming for objective reality. The composition is based on strong vertical elements in black and purple with lighter diagonal marks in black and red. When placed against a background of complementary yellow, the work becomes a striking piece of abstract decorative design.
