Norm Yip's Elysium, No. 1 is not only a stunning debut in his new series but also heralds a transformative era in his artistic practice, marking a significant shift that will unfold through his collaboration with Artbridger. This evocative piece features deep blues and striking clusters of warm coral and rust, creating an ethereal landscape that hovers between the realms of nature and pure abstraction. The floating forms, reminiscent of celestial bodies or luminous blooms, evoke a dreamlike quality against the rich indigo backdrop, inviting viewers into a space of reflection and wonder. Anchored by a bold horizontal band of deep red at the bottom, the composition reflects Yip’s masterful handling of color and atmosphere, echoing the mysterious beauty of the aurora borealis he recently experienced in Saskatchewan. As the first of many works to come, Elysium, No. 1 signifies not only Yip's return to painting after a period of introspection but also a deeper connection to his surroundings, promising an exciting new chapter in his artistic journey.
Elysium, No. 1 presents an abstract, impressionistic landscape of floating, cloud- or flower-like forms set against a blue canvas. The sombre tones evoke an ominous, mysterious atmosphere, reminiscent of themes explored in Norm Yip’s Visitation series and Vibratory Field. This piece reflects a more contemplative and grounded approach, likely influenced by the slower rhythm of life in Saskatchewan. The ethereal beauty of the aurora borealis, which Yip recently experienced, has also left its mark, subtly inspiring the painting’s sense of wonder and stillness.
