Anita Mui's iconic lyric "Unable to behave" from her controversial hit "Bad Girl" perfectly encapsulates the rebellious spirit that defined Hong Kong's cultural awakening. When the song was initially banned by Hong Kong Radio for its provocative themes, it paradoxically catapulted into a cultural phenomenon that resonated throughout Chinese communities. This watershed moment didn't just mark a pinnacle in Mui's illustrious career – it fundamentally transformed Cantopop and ushered in an era of bold cultural expression that would redefine Hong Kong's identity.

I am honored to present "The True Value of Art," a landmark exhibition that marks the culmination of Artbridger's groundbreaking residency program at Soho House Hong Kong. This showcase emerges at the intersection of artistic heritage and contemporary innovation, drawing inspiration from the rich lineage spanning 19th-century art through German Expressionism—movements that have profoundly shaped my curatorial vision.

"Technically Collecting" scrutinizes the dynamic relationship between traditional artistic practices and contemporary technological innovations. The selected works create a curated dialogue among diverse technical approaches to art-making—ranging from masterful oil paintings to the innovative digital editions. This exhibition serves as a testament to the ongoing dialogue between traditional artistic practices and technological innovation. Through these selected works, we witness how contemporary artists navigate the technical demands inherent in their chosen media while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of artistic expression. The deliberate contrast between pieces showcasing technical mastery in traditional mediums and those exploring new technological frontiers fosters a vibrant conversation about the nature of skill and creativity in an increasingly digital landscape. The inclusion of authenticated digital and new media, alongside traditional media, reflects a forward-thinking approach to art acquisition and preservation within this collection. This technical diversity not only documents the current state of contemporary art but also anticipates future developments in artistic practice and collection-building, inviting audiences to engage with art in its multifaceted forms.

Mwimbi Fine Art x Artbridger inaugurates a dynamic gallery space with Saleh Loh’s Talibé—a project that transcends borders and disciplines. At the heart of the show is a constellation of tomato paste cans, reimagined as both objects of memory and markers of global exchange. Through these considered interventions, Loh centers the lived realities of Mauritania’s Talibé children, implicating the interconnected flows of commodity, capital, and history that shape individual lives and communities. This exhibition stands as both a challenge and invitation: to witness, to question, and to participate in an art discourse where witnessing becomes an act of resistance.
"Tsalwa: The Materiality of Stories" is a compelling collection that showcases Fumani Maluleke’s innovative use of Xitheve (traditional reed mats) as both medium and message. Rooted deeply in his Limpopo heritage, Maluleke’s work intricately weaves memories, ancestral narratives, and cultural symbolism into the textured surfaces of the mats. Each piece serves as a living archive of rural South African life, reflecting themes of home, community, land stewardship, and the intimate ties between people and place. Through the skilled manipulation of natural fibers, Maluleke challenges conventional notions of painting and sculpture, inviting viewers to experience the tactile and visual richness of cultural storytelling. The collection is a tribute to the stories passed down by grandmothers and elders, transformed into contemporary art that bridges generations. This collection underscores the enduring power of material culture to preserve identity, history, and collective memory.
