Lau Chin Hung's detailed, surrealist-influenced works hold commercial appeal, whilst going against the grain of current contemporary art trends. The intricate, imaginative compositions attract a dedicated audience, making Lau's pieces viable for the mainstream market. The technical mastery and salability of these works warrant consideration.
Best known for his paintings of cabbage, Lau has successfully combined experiences in France and Hong Kong to distinguish himself through his deep exploration of cultural identity and mastery of the medium of oil painting over a career spanning more than three decades. And one of the most iconic images is "cabbage floating in the sky," inspired by the concept of "the beginning of chaos" in Chinese Taoist beliefs, cabbage and Roman cuisine symbolize the artist's connection to his cultural roots after living overseas for more than three decades. Introducing themes of "dream and non-dream" and "reality and surrealism" into his paintings, he shows the viewer the potential and humility of life symbolized by vegetables.
