“The Inner 1” is suffused with a soft, cool light and painted using a muted colour palette comprising mainly thin washes of pale blue. The work suggests a mountainous landscape seen through veils of mist. This is not however a concealing haze but rather a splendid use of paint to suggest light and air and distance, all of which are entirely abstract and invisible, but in Lam's hands are given a profoundly evocative form.
Emotions are a delicate and complex subject, often difficult to articulate. People often conceal their true feelings deep within themselves, using surface-level language to mask their emotions, much like hidden scenery or some unspoken secrets. The experience is presented as a series of works that showcase inner dialogues. From a distance, the scenes appear calm, but they hide countless fragmented, chaotic, and disorganized states. The content of the dialogues, the turmoil of the soul, and the process of reflection are all interwoven in lines that conceal chaos and serenity, the past and the future, stagnation and flow, happiness and sadness. These patterns, lines, and color blocks may be wordless, but they convey a deep and intimate communication that is tightly intertwined. They record abstractions, time, memory, and spiritual states.
