“Tangling Stone #1” appears at first glance to owe its basic rock-like form to the practice of automatic writing but it is soon apparent that it is in fact a tightly constructed composition. The initial stone shape in black characters may have been made “automatically” ie without conscious impulse as to what the final shape may be, but the later additions in silver and white are given precise boundaries in order to make large areas of light and dark grey and give the form volume. The work is finished with a line of text in red, as if the stone is wrapped up with string.
