In this series, Hong employs the "Eight Principles of the Character 'Yong'" as the foundational technique for her "Folding Brushstroke" method. The character "永" (Yong), symbolizing eternity and permanence, is traditionally regarded as a crucial starting point in mastering Chinese calligraphy. This choice is significant, as it not only connects to the roots of calligraphic practice but also emphasizes the enduring nature of the immigrant experience.
The Lace Calligraphy–Parisian Life series involves interviewing Asian immigrants in Paris, asking them to choose a word that represents their life in the city. Hong Wai then transforms their private feelings into hardened voices through lace calligraphy, with each word representing a unique Parisian experience. Hong Wai used the "Eight Principles of the Character "Yong"' as the foundation for the "Folding Brushstroke" technique. The first lace calligraphy work si the character "永" (Yong). Traditionally, mastering the character "永" is considered the beginning of mastering basic calligraphy skills. Through creating the character "永," She established three-dimensional folding methods for each brushstroke, serving as an exploration of the "Folding Brushstroke" technique "Lace Calligraphy."
