“The star cuts” is a dark nocturnal scene, with the shadowy form of a figure, possibly dressed in a black turtleneck jumper, jacket and cap, looming towards us out of the picture plane. Exploding above them, and in fact interspersed between us and them, is a strongly delineated hard edged starburst form in bright white. This is no celebratory firework shell but something more menacing.
Here we go again. Chan explores the interplay between colour, composition, and narrative through dark hues. By capturing the essence and characteristics of oil painting, she has discovered her unique form of expression fused by a subtle, glossy and treacly use of oil paint.
