Andrea Samory is a self-taught Italian visual artist based in Tokyo, whose practice explores the uneasy intersection between the virtual and the material. Born in 1991, Andrea’s journey has taken him from Italy to Belgium and the UK, culminating in a Master’s in Architecture at the University of Ferrara, with a thesis developed under the guidance of Kengo Kuma at the University of Tokyo. His career bridges architecture, stage design, and sculpture, shaped by experiences at Kuma Lab and Kohei Nawa’s Sandwich Inc. Since establishing his Tokyo studio in 2021, Andrea has exhibited widely across Asia, Europe, and Australia, with presentations at institutions such as Princeton, UTokyo, and the AA School.
Andrea Samory’s work is grounded in a post-internet sensibility, materializing the intangible—those virtual images and unseen forces that shape the collective subconscious. He appropriates familiar motifs, stripping them from their idealized origins to reflect our shared anxieties and aspirations for the future. Drawing on Speculative Realism and Assemblage Theory, Andrea’s sculptures blend sci-fi, body horror, and magical realism, mirroring the relentless flux of information that defines our era. His use of shiny, soft, and vibrant materials seduces viewers into uncanny worlds, where beauty and corruption coexist, and where feelings of fascination and alienation collide. The recurring themes of growth, entropy, and mythology are expressed through the recombination and distortion of natural textures, realized through a hybrid of 3D sculpting, printing, and SFX techniques. Andrea’s evolving practice has earned him a place in exhibitions from Italy and Germany to Japan, Taiwan, Australia, Hong Kong, and South Korea. His first solo show in Tokyo in 2023 marked a significant milestone. Alongside gallery exhibitions, Andrea’s work has been featured in academic settings, including talks and presentations at Princeton University, the University of Tokyo, CEPT in India, and the AA School in London. Through these diverse platforms, Andrea continues to challenge and expand the boundaries of contemporary sculpture, inviting audiences to confront the strange, hybrid realities of our time.
