In “Entropy” the artist began with an underpainting in white and cream with touches of yellow ochre and light brown. He then applied hundreds of black lines both thick and thin and mainly on the diagonal so that they all met in the middle to make a dense ball. The image is then animated by the addition of thin washes of light brown, filling in some of the spaces made by intersecting lines to help project the image out of the picture plane and into the viewers own space. In a work such as this, knowing when to stop is important. Ding judges it nicely and conveys inventiveness, passion and emotional intensity.
