The canvas is divided into sections, representing both the coming together of different members of the family, and their dispersal overseas, hence 'Gathering and Parting'. While the left-over cake pieces speak of disappointment at the lack of people able to celebrate together, the overall mood of sadness is emphasised by the sombre colour palette.
I drew a cake as a symbolic representation of the migration wave in Hong Kong and its connection to my family. The day I drew it was mother’s day, but we have less familymembers in HK, so we are not able to finish it. This imagery reflects the layers of emotions, celebrations, and struggles intertwined with the exodus experience, just like the cakes separated into pieces.Through my art, I aim to offer viewers a glimpse into the tapestry of my experiences, inviting them to reflect on the profound impact of the Hong Kong exodus and the personal connections we hold with our families and the places we call home.
