The artist uses a blending technique in the sky and water, creating a smooth, almost ethereal effect that adds to the tranquility of the scene. The texture of the ice is more defined, showing brushwork that mimics the rugged surface of the frozen landscape. The use of vivid, turquoise blue in the water creates a dream-like quality, highlighting the purity and mystique of the Antarctic region. The choice to depict the moment of diving symbolizes a leap into the unknown and embracing challenges.
This painting shows penguins perching on some fragile ice out in the Antarctic with a brewing storm looming in the distance, however, it is interpreted as a stop motion of one penguin making an escape and jumping into the sea for temporary refuge from the storm, a representation of the destructive tide of man-made horrors that have ravaged their species and their sources of sustenance. Using a rather monotone palette with the focus on the small penguin on top the ice making a getaway, it serves as reminder of the hidden dark side of the Anthropocene that we so championed about its glory in the last quarter of the two millenniums, which wiped out most forms of diversity.
