Chinese and drawing ink on Satogami paper
This piece’s inspirations come from Oriental-styled nature depictions and arose following my trip to Lapland and witnessing the Northern Lights. Another piece guided by intuition, it depicted two Gods of the North (fictional) formulating the ultimate essence of the polar north, with the sentient world under their feet. Their guardian, a fiery bird, representing order, left a trail of galaxies in which a spitfire emerged, representing chaos. It followed the Finnish concept of the fight between chaotic and order energies, rather than the more distinct good and evil forces. The difference in the description of the energies inspired me to reflect on how we aggrandise the forces that have long coexist with us into the extreme ends of spectrums, and generalising the forces help us to understand more about them and exuded a higher state of power.
