A poignant portrayal of the beauty and fragility of life. The piece evokes a sense of serenity, with the fish seemingly suspended in mid-air, their scales glistening in the soft, calming light. Yet, despite the peaceful atmosphere, there is an undertone of melancholy that permeates the composition. It is as if the artist is urging us to slow down and appreciate the fleeting nature of life, for even the most tranquil scenes can conceal a deeper sense of longing or loss. The muted colours add to the overall feeling of contemplation and introspection, inviting the viewer to ponder the deeper meanings of the artwork.
Salted fish is a method of preserving fish with dry salt; it can also be referred to as “corpse” in Cantonese. The heads of the fish are wrapped and they are of different species or sizes. Though it is difficult to identify their homeland, it is certain that they were caught together. After they died one by one, a person kindly preserved their bodies in the way of making salted fish, and tied them individually to a string on the ladder, neatly arranged, each with a decent red bow-knot as their solace. Facing the sea, the sun is warm and the sea is rippling in the breeze, but these fish can no longer enjoy the place of freedom they belong to.
