Curtis Chan's love of Japan is clear as he invites the viewer into a beautiful Japanese garden of memories - a well-ordered composition with meticulous over-all patterns in vibrant colours reminiscent of Matisse.
My recollections of the past and every moment and scene I experience in the present continue to influence my sense of longing and familiarity. Over the past few years, I have encountered things and places in London that remind me of Japan. After reflecting on this, I realized that most of my cherished memories are linked to my wonderful experiences in Japan. This longing for my past experiences has greatly influenced my creative work during these few years. My paintings depict idealistic scenes that reflect my psychological states, revolving around my idealised past and present longing. They are set in an unreal setting, as these scenes do not exist in reality. Each painting combines various scenes from memories and old photos into one, creating an intimate space. Garden imagery is common in my work, heightening the sense of an ideal, as gardens are often seen as ideal spirits, like paradise. My works contain decoratively fragmented elements that represent the particular traces of my past, symbolizing my fragmental memories. Vibrant colors and gentle brushstrokes create a dreamy, romantic, and optimistic atmosphere. These components combine to form an idealistic scene, like an inner space interweaving reality and reverie.
