The Last MatchFinnish artist Kallela’s inspiration for Finnish myths ignited my interest in Finnish nature and mythology. Combined with a trip to Lapland and witnessing the Northern lights, this piece was inspired by the legends behind the Northern lights which told of its power and essences circulating around Northern polar countries and tribal communities, regarding their views on mythological existence and the afterlife. Depicting three of the Celestial Undertakers releasing the souls of the deceased as they play football with a walrus skull, the souls include those of ordinary people, gods, children who died at birth, and warriors. Maidens are dancing around the field as they surround the deceased and rejoice with them. Death is both a occasion of mourning, of one passing away, and celebration, of recognising one's achievements.
