“The Performers No.1” is a complicated scene, made more so by an almost cubist approach to the way light fractures it into distinct planes. Loose washes of colour drip from one plane to another, blurring the boundaries between them and distorting the scene still further. It does not aim for realism but rather to capture the visual sensations of an ordinary everyday moment as internalised by the artist.
