“Weeding” introduces us to a cartoon character wearing a prim black hat, a neckerchief tied around their neck and a sweatshirt emblazoned on the front with the cartoon figure of a ghost. Their attention has been caught by the antics of an ant which appears huge in comparison but the clever use of a solid block of black with a wave motif justifies the abrupt change of scale and helps make for a coherent composition. The brightly coloured figure stands out in sharp contrast against a dark background which depicts a building in the distance and some plants, carrots perhaps, with their leafy fronds torn off.
My romantic date with an ant. The painting was created after Chan returned from her artist residency in Lai Chi Wo, Hong Kong. This painting is a remembrance of her experience in the farm soil.
