In the third work in the “Florence” series, Tse expands her view to include much more of the body of her subject. Painted outlines around the head and hand help to give both more emphasis. The collaged elements seem to have been selected more for impact than the earlier works and the impression overall is that this is more of an attempt to describe the character of her sitter than her appearance. This is a work that seems to draw from Gestalt psychology and its teaching that our perceptions of and judgements of people are determined not so much by the detail of what we see but the whole pattern of our experience.
Painting three out of three, from the Florence series For many years, I painted animals, but my most recent works focus on female portraits, which depict the sensuality of women through mixed mediums, complex textures and bright colours. The paintings are intricately composed of humans, animals, obscure objects, nature elements and machine parts. My obsession with female portraits is deeply rooted in an obsession with self, while navigating the journey of life. I ponder feminine emotions and the critical question: What is the true definition of beauty? Sometimes we are elegant, sometimes we are vulnerable, sometimes we are sexy, fearless, sensitive, affectionate. As I explore the complexities of feminism, I transfer the multi-layered depth of emotions onto my canvases.
