“Welcome Back” is a still life of food and flowers. The composition is close-cropped which brings the viewer into an intimate relationship with the image. A bouquet of flowers, salvia and carnations perhaps, in a textured vase with a Post-it note attached occupies the left hand side of the painting with breakfast things on the other. The work is painted with strong brushwork, thick paint and bold outlines.
Although the first night was sleepless, when I saw breakfast at their table with flowers and a note with greetings the next morning, I ate in silence and cried. It’s what I eat all the time, but it tasted differently somehow. It was full of love. Such daily routine gently accompanied me when I was repairing myself during those months. I must record this.
