Bright, bold colors on a deep black background and the impossible, Escher-like spaces, Cheng’s deceptively intricate and surreal architectural paintings center on conceptions of home and hybridity. The painting series Memory map shows abstracted and distorted places from memory - a garden, an apartment building, Ye seeks to explore her relationship with home, both as a physical place and as an idea. Ye questions whether the feelings of safety and longing are attached to real locations or spaces that exist only in her memory and imagination, emphasizing the comfort of home and the destabilization that occurs when disconnected from it.
