Ye Cheng often uses the motif of a box in her compositions, representing Homi K. Bhabha’s idea of a ‘Third Space’ which is neither Eastern nor Western but a separate place that allows for a mixture of cultures, giving equal value to both. On the right of this diptych, the black box is closed, against a background of beautiful traditional Chinese mountains; on the left, the picture is reversed with the mountains in the box, against a black background.
