“Mongkok Romance” is perhaps Crosbie's most successful work, as he has freed himself of the shackles of fidelity to the photographic source image, and applied an imaginative element to the scene. By placing a young couple in the foreground, the artist gives us the opportunity to look over their shoulders and to see what they see. It's a work that evokes the trepidation with which we may all face the future. It speaks to the physical and emotional aspects of life in Hong Kong, of tradition and change.
Watercolour on 300 gsm paper showing a young Hong Kong couple looking at Fa Yuen Street in Mong Kok. This is my 1st intentional combination of an urban street view together with figurative work as I wanted to create a more fantasy-style composition that may or may not defy logic. I wanted to celebrate the energy and vibrancy of a 'grassroots' market area and combine it together with a young couple admiring their local environment to show how hopeful the city's future is.
