This piece feels more emotionally charged than some of his other works, with the hot colors and bold geometry suggesting a city crackling with energy and possibility. It's a vision of Hong Kong that captures both its architectural grandeur and its dynamic spirit.
In this striking variation, Cheng takes his exploration of Hong Kong's skyline into more dramatic territory, employing a bold screen-printed pattern of crimson and purple circles that dominate the sky. The pattern creates a sense of electric energy above the meticulously rendered cityscape, suggesting perhaps the vibrancy of Hong Kong's famous neon-lit evenings. What's particularly intriguing here is Cheng's treatment of the reflections. Unlike his other pieces, the lower portion employs blocks of gray that create an abstract interpretation of the city's reflection, punctuated by those signature vertical lines in yellow, turquoise, and magenta. These geometric forms seem to deconstruct the precise architectural drawing above, creating a fascinating dialogue between representation and abstraction. The vertical lines take on an even more prominent role in this composition, with bold yellow strokes cutting through both sky and water, acting as visual lightning rods that energize the entire piece. The contrast between these strong verticals and the circular pattern in the sky creates a dynamic tension that keeps the eye moving through the composition. Cheng's linework in the cityscape remains characteristically precise, but there's a lightness to the touch that allows the buildings to appear to float between the dramatic sky and their abstract reflections. The white clouds, carved out of the circular pattern, provide crucial negative space that prevents the composition from becoming overwhelming.
